Default Engine thread

Ok so I have no car to put one in yet. I was gonna build up a rat rod for next summer. But over the winter I was going to build up an engine. Basic goals/requirments are pump gas, 500+ hp with equal or more torque, and carb'd. Driveability is not an issue, hell I wont even have power steering. I havn't figured out if I want an auto or manual, but if I go auto ill be going with a convertor very well into the powerband of the engine. I'm going for the shitty lookn car, to much power for the tires, loud as hell, piss off your neighbors kinda thing that when you mat it you are scared for your life

I had/have a 4 bolt, 400 SBC lined up that is bored .030 over and decked, painted and screened valley. All lil stuff done to the block like sanding down all the rough edges and such. Only problem is he wants $1G for it. I was gonna go get it this weekend but backed out and am having second thoughts of paying that much. But at the same time he is the one "coaching" me on what parts to use, and is givin me hardened pushrods, cam, and rockers for $300 all brand new as well as a free engine stand.

I'd rather stay with a ford or chevy, don't kno much about mopar. And I'd rather keep it to a small block. I was lookn at ford flathead V8's and couldn't gather much info. That would be a sweet engine on a rat rod, but I have a feeling you cannot get much power out of them, and parts are hard to find.

What opinions do you all have? is that to much for a bare block? Should I go with something else? thanks in advance, Nick

I'd say go with a small block on spray. Mu old combo 351w/C4 ran 11:50's on motor (pump gas) and tens on spray w/ some race gas mixed in.

That seems rather pricey to me. I would find the vehicle before getting worried about what motor I would run, only my opinion. I noticed you made mention of a flathead I think that is a killer idea however I'm unsure of power output and limitations of what they will withstand. As far as what brand you choose they all will work well when built right, I myself am a Ford man but do know that a sb chevy is cheaper to build than most others.

You can get an easy streetable 500 HP out of a big block Ford or Chevy. A buddy of mine built a 468 (454 bored .060 I think) that made 540 540 with 9.5:1 compression, off the shelf cam, victor Jr, and some ported oval port heads. A 460 would be the same story. A 500 HP flat head...I don't know how feasible that is at all. More money than it could ever be worth.

I could talk to the guy with the 468. He might sell it. It's in Nebraska though. He just got a job in Texas. He's talked about parting the car that the engine was built for. I don't know if he'd sell the motor or not but possibly. I could ask him. It's been on the dyno but never been run in a car. I don't know if you are at all interested in a complete motor though.

If you want N/A power and aren't so concerned with weight, I'm a firm believer that a big block is the way to go. If you are trying to save weight though the Windsor might be the better option. Big power comes with cheaper, less exotic parts the more cubic inches you have the capacity for. And huge cubic inch windsor stroker motors are getting into the realm of exotic parts. The big block will give you big power with no head ache a lot easier than the windsor. And they made 460's into the 90's in trucks so you might be able to pull one out of a junk yard fairly cheap.
