Default Thermostats?

A couple of my f-body friends were talking about how they all had changed to 160* thermostats instead of the stock 180* or something like that... any of you guys done that? Did it change performance any way? If it's better and makes it stay cooler, why would they even put the higher ones in from the factory?

There are really no benefits unless you change the operating temp of the fan, on your 05 you'll have to have it burned into a chip. Also to mention that the new motors are built with higher tolerances, maybe back in the old days it helped but motors now are built to run with a 190 thermostat. All in all without some type of programer or a tune it is a waste of time, at cooler temps the computer is going to add fuel because it thinks the car is not at operating temperature... Hope this helps !!!!!!

Most cars today come with a 210* thermostat, and the cooling fans programmed to come on around 220*. The main reason they do this is for less emissions (higher temps = more complete combustion = less emissions). As far as performance, white96GT pretty much accurately described what to expect.
