Jason Scruggs has been through enough of these situations to know what to expect when the ADRL Inaugural Texas Drags takes place at Houston Raceway Park (HRP) on July 23-24 in Baytown, TX.Of course, that doesn’t mean anything will be easy, but the experienced and talented Pro Extreme driver is ready for the challenge.Or, should we say, challenges. The fact is, there are plenty of obvious ones heading into this new ADRL race, the first of which is the double-race weekend. The ADRL Universal Technical Institute (UTI) Dragpalooza VI presented by Safety-Kleen will be completed on Friday and the Texas Drags will be completed the next day. It’s a great opportunity to turn the weekend into a massive success, but Scruggs also knows the challenges that having two races in one weekend presents.“Really, the only difference is you don’t have runs to get things perfected,” Scruggs said. “You’ve got to have your act together and be ready to race right from the start. You can’t take a while to get going.”Scruggs and his ‘68 Camaro have seemingly had their act together all year. In workmanlike fashion and away from the limelight, Scruggs currently sits seconds in the points standings in a loaded division. He narrowly trails Alex Hossler, though Joshua Hernandez is nipping at his heels. That’s the theme for the class, which brings us to the second major challenge for the race at HRP.The extreme heat - the track registered nearly 150 degrees earlier this week - will make proper set-up a must for an extended stay. After all, a lost weekend doesn’t make for good news in a class this tightly-congested at the halfway point of the season.“It’s going to be hot and there’s going to be a lot of racing in hot conditions,” Scruggs said. “It’s going to be hot and nasty, but we’ll try to get through it. Everyone is going to have to deal with it.”Scruggs has been consistent all year, winning the Georgia Drags and racing well in Richmond and Michigan. He’ll also shrug off the Texas heat because, after all, “Somebody’s got to win,” Scruggs says with a smile.
