Default Tires

Pondering drag radials...

My stock wheels are 17x8, is there any point in getting DRs that will fit (245 or maybe 275?) or should I just save my tire money until I have wider rims?

And what about wheel brands that are solid quality but not too expensive? I don't care about looks, just function... thinking I'll try to stay with 17" wheels, 9" or 10" wide. Right now there seems to be a somewhat limited selection of wheels with my backspacing but by next year I imagine most brands will be available...

You can fit 275's on there no roblem....and the drag radials will make a difference.

My suggestion - If you're not going to go really crazy with modifications and/or want to keep that stock look but want drag radials... keep the rims and put some 275's out back for now. You can always have the rims widened in the future when it's time for a new set of tires. But I like those stock wheels though.

Sweet.. gonna try those 275s then I think... I kinda like the look of the stock wheels too and it does look better to have 4 of the same wheel instead of different ones in the back cause I'm too cheap to buy a whole set...

Lol!

Are you thinking about the BFG's or the Nitto drag radials?

That was my next question!

From what a couple people have said, I'm leaning towards Nitto... Since my car will spend almost all the time on normal roads, as opposed to on a track...

Yeah the Nitto's last longer, handle better in rain, etc.....they don't hook as well as the BFG's though.

Oh....and they have a better tread pattern, IMO.

Related question... are you supposed to heat drag radials for best traction or is that only done with real slicks?

Definitly heat up the drag radials.

If you drive the car (daily driver) you want Nitto's. BFG's wont last 5000 miles.

Heat the hell out of them to get them sticky. Drop the pressure at the track too. You will get 15000-20000 miles out of the Nitto's probably.

Mickey Tompson makes a kick-ass drag radial. I'd get another pair of stock wheels though-they wont last long on the street and I'm sure suck in the rain.

I've been hearing all kinds of good things about the MT's. Unfortunately i'm without a car to put them on right now, but by next summer I should have something to throw them on

There so good they've been banned by certain sanctioning bodies in the drag radial classes!
