While the cars look pretty darn close to stock through and through, Super Stock class cars have countless little secrets, expenses and trick parts hidden beneath the subtle exteriors. Running well into the 9’s on “factory” components probably made it obvious that there’s some secret squirrel stuff going on here, would you believe that in most cases, these guys are even running $40 a piece titanium lug nuts just to spare some rotating weight from their rides? Among the weight savers, the vast majority of this Savoy’s body is constructed of fiberglass, though it must retain precise factory dimensions to be legal for AA/SA.
The car started off 2010 in Dave Schultz’s hands for Nostalgia Super Stock racing, but as confirmed on
Mopar Style, the car was sold to John Woods of
Performance Auto, who's got his own set of plans for this classic Mopar.

John’s original plan was to rid the car of its fiberglass front-end and button up a sheetmetal nose to run in NHRA Stock Eliminator but, John seems to have ideas of selling the car, too. C’mon John, that Performance Auto decal across the doors fits so well. Seeing as they’ve already made a few of their very own tweaks to the car, and they’re just entertaining the idea of possibly selling or trading it for something different, the odds are fair it’ll stay with Performance Auto for some time. If the car doesn’t pass along to a third owner in 2010, just maybe it’ll get its first glimpse of competition since 2009 at the Chrysler Classics event, where it ran a pair of nearly identical 10.0’s. The car’s quickest pass to date however, is a 9.91 at an IHRA event, saddled with a weigh-in of 3620 pounds.
Ray Barton HEMI power in Super Stock racing is seemingly unrivaled in this day in age.
With a Ray Barton-built, cross-rammed HEMI, lightened 8.75 rear end and a custom built 727 transmission, it’s easy to say this car is ready to perform, with the cost of replication easily hitting the big $100,000 mark. Whether it be in the hands of John & Performance Auto or yet another new owner, all we can hope for is that someone will do what the Mopar gods intended for this very car to do – RACE its heart out!
