You're hundreds, maybe thousands of miles from home. You're driving a car that Triple-A won't touch with a ten foot breaker bar. You've got four days of the Hot Rod Power Tour left, and you're stuck on the side of the road with a hot rod that won't start, let alone tour. Then, in the distance, salvation!
Once again, it's the GM Motor Medics to the rescue. Doesn't matter what you're driving on the Power Tour - these guys are ready to get dirty and get you back on the road if it's humanly possible. Per GM's Dr. Jamie Meyer, "It’s a free service GM has provided every year we’ve sponsored the Power Tour. These are extremely talented technicians who work in the concept vehicle program, so they typically build concept and show cars that are 5-10 years into our future. We have two rigs, and if anyone has trouble, even on route, they pull over and help them."
Take a good look, because this is as clean as they'll be all week. While they're always on alert for casualties on the road, the real work begins when everyone pulls in and the walking wounded come looking for a little help to get ready for the next leg of the tour. "You’ll see them 60-cars deep on the really hot days," says Meyer, and last year they worked on close to 300 cars over the course of the week. Seeing how people use their favorite cars in the real world (and how they sometimes break down) can't help but translate into better concepts for GM's future, and if you believe in karma (pun intended), Larry Hebert, Gary Mulder, Tim Saunder, Wayne Goody, Randy Gallegher, and Billy Ketchum are earning it in spades.
