Default SAM Awards Over $50,000 in scholarships To Hot Rodders of Tomorrow

The School of Automotive Machinists (SAM) donated $57,000.00 toward scholarships to the high school automotive teams that finished first, second and third at the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Division 4 Competition this past May 8th. Team MSD from Eastern Oklahoma County Tech Center took first place by disassembling and reassembling a high performance engine with a time of 60 minutes and 15 seconds.

Each member of the first place team received a $5,000.00 scholarship from SAM and will compete in the National Championship at the SEMA Show in November, 2010. Team Royal Purple from Hereford High School in Texas placed second and each member received a $3,000.00 scholarship while Team Comp Cams from Pampa High School in Texas placed third and each member received $2,000.00.

“SAM is happy to support high school automotive students who are excited about the automotive industry” said Judson Massingill, Founder and Director of Education at SAM. “This competition is about engine building and that’s what we teach our students to do – build engines that make a lot of horsepower and stay together to win races. We hope these students will continue their automotive training and go on to work in the high performance and racing industry,” said Judson.

Eight high school Automotive Tech teams were invited to compete in the event, which consisted of five students each and an instructor/coach. Grades, attendance, and skill were all considerations toward chosen schools, with the individual schools setting the standards and guidelines for involvement.

The event was modeled after a between rounds tear down at a drag race, with identically prepared small block Chevrolet engines. Students had to properly disassemble the engines using only hand tools, employing all of the proper torque and disassembly procedures. All parts with the exception of the camshaft and crank remain in the block and once inspected, the judges gave the go-ahead to reassemble the engine. Time penalties were added for dropped parts, improper methods, poor sportsmanship, and the like.

Team MSD, with the win, represent Division 4 at the National Championship at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, known as the “Showdown at SEMA.” There, they will face Division 2 winner Team ARP, Division 3 winner Team PRW, Division 7’s Twam Edelbrock, and the forthcoming division 8 winner. Division 7’s Team Autometer will play the role of the wild card.
