Question When would you add a roll cage?

At what point do you think a roll bar/cage should be added to a vehicle? I don't mean what is a requirement to go down the track, but when do you actually think it should be added to a vehicle. At what ET or MPH would you add one?

Just thought it would be a good topic.

if you drive the car around alot i wouldnt put one in at all. without a helmet on the cage is more likely to injure you then help in an accident

Here are my thoughts, 1st are you willing to reduce the weight somewhere else to make up for the cage?(100#'s = 1/10 second per 1/4 as a rule of thumb), 2nd a cage will reinforce the exsisting frame (as most of our cars are unibody this is a good thing).
I know that at a 11.35 at 120 mph my car tended to get loose at the end of the track with slicks for may own safety I have decided before going to the track in the spring a cage will be going in my car. However this is a weekend toy it only sees the street a dozen times , mostly track beyond that. So I say it would be more at the owners discretion for a street car. Just my .02!!!!!!!

Good topic.

At 11.5 my car felt stable at the top end and I didn't feel I needed a cage. 10's....mabye. But the car is driven on the street 2500 miles a year. Maybe 4 miles at the track . So I don't know.

I guess it comes down to the owners own decision in the end.
Or if you are going fast enough down the track that you keep getting kicked out and you don't want that anymore.

cages look cool and automatically make u look faster. if ur ever goin to do road coarse racing they come in handy too. im not talkin about a full out crazy cage, just a simple 4 point. havin a sedan makes it easier to get people in the back seat. some sho guys are runnin cages for thier track cars. also helps for seatbelts.

I would never put a cage in my car. My fat ass wouldn't be able to recline the seat back far enough, then the car wouldn't be comfortable to drive anymore.

depends on the car i guess...if you going low low 11's possibly tens i would put a cage in just for the added strength/security. I know you said not according to rules of tracks but they have that rule in there for a reason. i think the rule is 11.5 and lower for hard tops and im sure its there for a reason..some water head didnt just pick some random number that sounded good to him

Isn't 11:49 and faster, (on hardtops) the ET at which you HAVE to add a roll bar to be legal on the track?

ACCORDING TO NHRA:
A roll bar is required in any convertible running 13.99 seconds or quicker in the quarter mile, and in other cars beginning at 11.99. The roll bar is accepted in vehicles running as quick as 10.00 second e.t., provided the stock firewall and floorboard is intact, other than for installation of wheel tubs.

If the floor and/or firewall has been modified, then a full roll cage is required beginning at a 10.99 e.t. A full roll cage is required in any vehicle running 9.99 seconds or quicker, and any vehicle running 135 mph or faster (regardless of e.t.).

ACCORDING TO MILAN DRAGWAY:
11.50-13.49 Needs a roll cage/bar if convertible
10.00-11.49 Needs a roll cage/bar otherwise.

never, getting races are hard after you cage it.

no, i like to go to the track and will do only what i have to do pretty much.

hard to say, b4 i got clipped on my motorcycle i thought helmet laws were bs , and i don't anymore.

i think if you 90* into the wall at 120 mph a cage isn't gonna do much, but then again maybe it does.

o btw, svt.....the milan rules are NHRA rules, they changed last year or 2 years ago. they are the same now. 11.49 HT and 13.49 'vert
