What should a gear change go for?
I'm just starting to look around for a place to swap out the 3.31 gears on my Mustang with some 3.73s. I called the stealership, and they quoted me $650, not including the parts, which I would supply.
I know those guys are usually overpriced, but is that WAAAAAY over the top? What does a gear change go for around here?

Do what I did, send a PM to Scott@DrivelineSolutions.
He'll give you a much better price, and he is very good at what he does!
(I also happen to know he working on 05+ mustangs... )

I had mine done for about 250.00 plus gears and install kit at DTS on Grosebeck.

Wait wait wait! You have 3.31s? That mean you have an automatic? Or did they put 3.31s in the manuals in 07?
For the 05+ automatics, 4.10s do not work very well. You'll want to leave it stock and get a higher stall converter for some real fun.
I tried 4.10s myself, gained about 1/10th Then I decided to go back to almost stock (3.55s) and get a TCI converter (about 3800 stall) and gained another 6/10ths. I'm sure if I still had my stock 3.31s it'd be very close to what it is now.
With the tune from Lidio, the high stall really isn't bad for daily driving. Lockup in 5th gear only, at 62MPH, or 40MPH if cruise control is on. If you drive alot and care about MPG, it dropped from 21 to 17 with 4.10s and got back up to 19-20 with 3.55s and converter with my mix of city/highway.

Yikes, I guess I'll steer clear of the dealer!
Yes, I have 3.31s on my automatic. The 07 manual comes with 3.31 stock as well, I am supposing for MPG sake.
What is the stock torque converter on the 05+? I haven't read how a high stall can work with the lower gearing to give you better take off speed. Time to google....
I was tempted by the 4.10, but a few of my assumptions pointed to the 3.73s:
-Higher RPMs at highway speed, which I wasn't comfortable with
-Lower mileage
-More whine/noise than lower gears
-I heard 4.10s are less effective with blown engines, which is where I'm eventually heading

Hmm.. I think I'd wait and do the blower install before changing any gears or converter, that way it'll be easier to pick the right setup for the type of blower you get.. unless the blower is a couple years off, then I'd get an n/a friendly converter now.
I don't remember the exact specs on the stock converter, but at least that's easy to test yourself.

lab,
Been reading up on torque coverters....With the higher performance on your converter and the resulting higher temp, did you make sure to get a tranny cooler installed as well?

Nope, Lidio told me the stock cooler is pretty good on these cars and it can handle the higher stall converter.
