Although this might be little bit of salt in a still-open wound, we wanted to rewind the clock and take a good look at some original advertisements for the '65 Pontiac GTO. These black-and-white television spots are pretty dated in tone and context (and well, pretty dang sexist), but you know what? Those were the times, when men were men, women were women, and muscle cars were just plain bad ass. Live with it, you bleeding heart hippie.
For those unaware, Pontiac adopted the tiger as the unofficial mascot of the GTO. The tiger theme crept into Pontiac's racing program, eventually ending up on the Royal Pontiac-built GeeTO Tigers which campaigned through the 1966 racing season. The two (one black and gold, the other white and gold), also featured a costumed tiger who raced the 'Goats down the strip. It was revealed that George Hurst was the original Tiger.
Banking on the boon of receiving
Motor Trend's car of the year, Pontiac designed some pretty "far-out" ads illustrating a faux press conference awarding the Big Chief GTO with the
Motor Trend nomination, as well as showing some of the road testing (as well as some curious off-road testing). While we don't know if a Pontiac was ever considered for the role of the "General Lee," we do think it might have fared rather well.
