FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TUESDAY, JANUARY 25, 2005
CONTACT: Dawn Garner, MDOT Office of Communications, 906-485-6322, ext. 12
Wanted: Cars and trucks for historic timeline
January 25, 2005 -- Do you have an old Gremlin or Pacer sitting in your garage? Or perhaps you own a show car or muscle car that is the best that year had to offer. Then, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) wants your car to participate in a historic event, 100 years in the making.
The MDOT Centennial Automotive Timeline will be held over Labor Day Weekend at the Little Bear Arena in St. Ignace. The department will be selecting 100 vehicles, one from each model year from 1905 through 2005 to participate.
"We're not just looking for the typical cars you see at most car shows," said MDOT Director Gloria J. Jeff. "We want the old family station wagon, the kind of cars we all grew up with."
Show car owners are encouraged to participate, but so are owners of other vehicles. "This is going to be something people can walk by and go, hey,my grandmother had one of those," said event organizer Dawn Garner. "I won't feel this timeline is complete without an El Camino or wood-grained station wagon." Only one car from each year will be selected to participate in the show. Car owners are encouraged to submit a photo and description of their vehicle. The department will review the submissions and select the 100 vehicles that will be displayed at the Labor Day event.
"This is going to be a fun event and we hope residents get involved, whether it's submitting their car to be a part of the timeline, or attending the festivities," added Director Jeff.
Car owners can apply to participate in the event by e-mailing
their information to garnerda@michigan.gov.

I'll tell my dad... I don't think very many people liked Ranchero's but the paint could definately get some brownie points.

Theres a big Car Show/Cruise in St Ignace every year in June, Ive gone a couple of times in the past. Nice drive up north in a top down 67 Camaro RS/SS 396 4spd. Stay in Mackinac, cruise over the bridge every morning(its a 3 day deal) usually around 2000 or so cars. Makes for a nice weekend.
The MDOT thing sounds kinda cool except for one thing, I thought there was a budget crisis. They keep raising fees and taxes for us to drive our cars, and now they're gonna throw a 100 yr birthday party for MDOT. MDOT, the bus people ,the ones who are supposed to keep our roads in shape. Wonder whose budget thats comin out of, or maybe Granholm has another FEE planned.

Granholm
Doesn't a big car show like that make money though? I assume they'll have vendors (t-shirts, food, etc..) and other things to make money. But who knows.
