Dear Forum Gods
I need help with one of the most asked questions, what gear size should I run.
I've been told 3.73 and 4.10 but I would like to know what the forum thinks. The motor is stock with bolt ons, I will have Nitrous, and has an AOD . The car needs to be streetable but perform at the track. I know that I can't have both so I lean more to streetable. Thank you forum gods.
Oh yea, Scott you want to rebuild my 8.8 for me?

4.10 with AOD and 3.73 with a stick, thats the general rule of thumb.

I would agree with that, except that he's says he wants to lean more towards streetable, so I would say 3.73. Also, nitrous use tends to make the motor tac quicker, so 3.73's should be more than adequate.

So the use of Nitrous changes this general rule? If this is the case then why not run 3.90's? On the streetable side I just don't want to be turning 4,000rpm going down the freeway. I generally drive between 70-80mph. This is not my daily driver but I do like to drive the stang to work (40 miles one way) and just take it for a spin when ever I can. Thanks for all the info. this site is the BEST.
Scott, I'll call you today to set up a time.

My C4 w/ 3.73's turns about 4000 at 75... i wouldn't think you'd have a problem with 4.10's and aod, but even if you do you could always get a taller tire like i did to make up for it a little...

hopefully someone can help me out with this..
a trans without over drive like a th350 or c4 whatever..final drive is 1:1 correct? well if at 75 mph ur runnin 4000 rpm w/ 3:73's. so at the track when people are makin passes @ 110+ what rpm are they spinning, especially since alot of them run 4:10's or larger?? i dont like taking my motor passed 6k. so is this gonna limit me at the strip so my mph wont be as high??

I've got 373's in my car and it's a good all around gear. I thought about 390's also but when i called around there were 1. much more expensive or 2. weren't in stock and didnt know when they could get them in stock. HO that was over a year ago But i'd say 373

But youve got a 4.6, it really needs more gear cause it needs to rev higher, quicker because of the low torque. He's got a 5.0, alot more low end.

A 5.0 w/ those mods, and since you want it more towards the streetable side....I'd say 3.73's.

I still would say you could run 80mph on the highway with 4.10's and overdrive. Unless you're one of those left lane haulers and like to go 100 i'd go with the 4.10's
