Stan Allen had heard of David Janes but admitted he knew very little about him before they talked for the first time just prior to the Hardee’s Independence Drags IV last July in Topeka. The duo talked at Janes’ shop in Missouri before going testing in Kansas City leading up to the race, which Allen points to as the turnaround in his 2010 season in the American Drag Racing League’s (ADRL) Pro Nitrous division. They fostered a strong working relationship, and Allen and his team worked hard to turn around his car, doing it so well that Allen advanced to one final and clinched a spot in the “Battle For The Belts.”The finals appearance came at Dragstock, which was actually completed during a wild weekend at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Oh., as Allen snuck into the eight-car World Championship field. Using that as momentum for the off-season, Allen is preparing for what he hopes is a banner year in 2011.He is thrilled with the addition of David Janes to the Bankston Boyz team, and Allen is also putting in the work - thanks to his always-impressive dedication in the weight room - to bring the best total package to the starting line in 2011. Of course, getting a new lightweight ‘69 Camaro from David Janes Race Cars should help matters, too. The car will be painted within the next week and everyone, including Allen, is excited to see what comes of the new partnership with Janes. “Never in the six years that I have been working with Bankston Boyz Racing have I witnessed so much focus on team,” team spokesman Mark Teague said. “All I heard from (David and Stan) was team.”In Part Two of our Two-Part “Beyond the Guardwall” piece with Bankston Boyz Racing, Allen talks about his hopes for the 2011 season, his new teammate and the state of the competitive Pro Nitrous division.Question: After meeting with David, what was it that set him apart from others that you see everyday at the track? Was it his personality or reputation, or something else?Stan Allen: “Honestly, I just sat back and watched him direct his team to get the car he built for Shannon Jenkins, first, to go straight, and then to be competitive. The quality of work, innovative thinking, and attention to detail is impressive and the entire team over there should be commended. We made the next several races at Houston and St. Louis, and the car began to respond, but by the time we went to Rockingham the car was really closing the gap. We couldn’t have done it without changing our testing policy. We went from testing after races to testing the Wednesday and Thursday prior to the national events in the same geographic region. I mean testing at State Capital Raceway in Baton Rouge isn’t quite the same as testing in Norwalk.“Between my crew and David’s team, the car really came around in Rockingham and it continued to Norwalk where we realized we had a shot at the top eight in points. Qualifying was crazy and one minute I was in, the next I was out, and when the mushroom cloud had settled, we were in.”Q: What are your goals as a driver and for the team in 2011?Allen: “It’s simple: we want to win a Pro Nitrous Championship! That’s easy to say, but when your team competes at this level with the likes of Shannon Jenkins, Burton (Auxier, the 2010 PN World Champion), Charles Carpenter, Jim Halsey, Pat Stoken, Doug Riesterer and the rest, it makes this a very humbling category. Believe me, they have taught me some humility for sure!“I’m a competitor and I’m not taking off work, sometimes for a week at a time, just to qualify in the middle of the pack. I want to win. We have the right people in place to be successful along with the best equipment on the market.”Q: What else would like to say about the upcoming 2011 season and your new Bankston Boyz teammate?”Allen: “I am confident that with the addition of David that Bankston Boyz Racing will put forth their best effort yet, provided some luck falls our way as well. As far as David is concerned, I will just say that we hit it off because we both have the desire to be champions, and have similar values away from the track. He just fits into the puzzle and in a short time has become just one of the guys.”Bankston Boyz Racing is currently sponsored by the following companies: Red Line Oil, Jesel, Ross Pistons, Goodyear, Mississippi Foundation Repair, TeaCo Geophysical and Vicci Custom Apparel.
