The way Quain Stott viewed his season, everything after June was icing on the cake. After missing the Ford Drive One Summer Drags in June due to a prior commitment, Stott barely blinked the rest of the year in the ADRL’s toughest class.Instead, the North Carolina native delivered an impressive performance in Pro Extreme, staying in the top eight in the points race and advancing to the semifinals of the Speedtech “Battle For The Belts” at Texas Motorplex.Stott proved to be the surprise of the class at the LenMar Motorsports ADRL World Finals VI in Ennis, Texas, knocking off Jason Scruggs and Alex Hossler during his eventful run.Eventual champion Frankie Taylor ended the fun by chasing down Stott in the semifinals, but even that wasn’t nearly enough to ruin Stott’s day - or his 2010 season.“We were happy,” Stott said. “I was happy just to get in (to the eight-car field) after we missed that race. We had to overcome that, so we were going to be happy either way.”A top-end crash in Rockingham only added to the adversity for Stott and his LeeBoy team.Luckily for him, rain pushed back the finish of Dragstock and Stott responded by going a career-best 3.69 in qualifying in Norwalk, OH, which was the site of the double-race weekend that ended the ADRL regular season. That helped Stott stay in the top eight, though getting a first-round matchup with two-time World Champion Jason Scruggs wasn’t particularly inviting.Stott, though, made the most of it, going 3.79 to advance.Stott went an even better 3.71 to beat Hossler, the No. 2 seed, in the first round before Taylor went 3.64 in the semifinals en route to his first World Championship.“I owed Jason. He’s gotten me the last two times we’ve raced,” Stott said. “I owed Frankie, too, but I couldn’t seem to get him.“We’ve obviously got some catching up to do. I think this car can do a .67, but Frankie’s doing a .59 and he also ran a .62 here. It’s going to be hard, but I’m just proud of Frankie and what he and his team are doing. They’ve got a lot of talent.”Stott will spend the off-season trying to make minor improvements to what is already a quick and powerful ‘63 Corvette.Stott already made a significant change in 2010 and he hopes some minor tweaks - and attending a full 2011 ADRL schedule - will continue to make him a Pro Extreme contender.“We put a converter in the car earlier in the season and it took me some time to adjust after having a clutch for so many years,” Stott said. “It just means changing the way I have done things, but with progress and success comes change in drag racing.”(Photos by ADRL/Richards)
