For whatever reason, people seem to forget the "off brand" performers of the 50's, 60's and 70's. It's frustrating to go to car show or your local track and see only Mustangs, Camaros, and Novas. Where are the Buicks, Oldsmobiles and Plymouths? Well, thankfully, there are plenty of folks still rocking the non Bow Tie and Blue Oval brands and really making a hell of a showing!
We found this OUTSTANDING golden '70 4-4-2 W-30 Oldsmobile on YouTube clicking off a ridiculously hard-pulling 10.50-flat-second pass at 1:30am at the Mid Season Championship at Norwalk Raceway Park during the 2nd round. In this video, the Olds is running 4.30 gears. Leaving the line at 1,800 off the footbrake, the big old Olds pulls pretty damn hard, yanking the wheels a good 6-inches in the air.
Poster "Olds1442" explains what motivates the original Ram-Air W-30; the 455ci plant was bored .040-over, with a stock crank spinning Eagle H-beam rods and Arias pistons, with Edelbrock heads, an Engle cam, and Victor intake topped with a 1000cfm Demon carb.
To this date, Olds1442's best pass was a 10.42.2007-second pass. Recently, he built a new motor with basically the same setup except for a set of CP pistons with the narrow ring gap. He also did some work to the TH400 transmission. With this setup, it went 10.250 on the 6,800rpm limiter.
